Intel’s P67 and H67 Chipset SATA Bug/Issue

Intel’s P67 and H67 Chipset SATA Bug/Issue is one the hot topic today.  The issue on P67 and H67 Chipset causes panic to Intel’s Sandy Bridge users and enthusiast. It also concerns me since, I bought a Gigabyte motherboard with a H67 chip on it which I also mentioned on my previous post. The said SATA BUG/Issue will deteriorate the SATA ports over time making those ports unusable.

Upon reading some reports from known hardware analyst website like ANANDTECH, it seems that the issue is not  that worse since only SATA II ports are affected of the said issue. And since P67 and H67 motherboards has 6 SATA ports, (2 SATA III and 4 SATA II), meaning  there are still 2 SATA III ports that are unaffected and available for use without any issue. Intel also said that performance slowdown will be noticeable after 3 years on 5% of the chipset users.

Sadly, the said bug is not repairable by any kind of firmware update or BIOS update because the problem is exactly on the hardware. The cause of the SATA bug is because of the high voltage leaking on the SATA II port transistor thus making damage to the port itself.

Production and sales are currently on hold, both on boards and Sandy Bridge Processor.  Revised chipset is expected to be done and release at the end of February onwards. The Z68 released date is not affected because the chip don’t have the said issue.

User’s that bought the early motherboards for Sandy Bridge Processors are expecting a replacement from the motherboard manufacturers and I am one of them. Good thing, the processor is not affected. If you already bought a motherboard, don’t be afraid to used it but be sure to place your device on SATA III ports to be safe. Intel will surely fixed this issue in due time.

What can you say about this? Feel free to leave a comment here. Thanks.
